Salvador
The
city was founded in 1549 by the first Governador General Tomé
de Souza and make capital city of Brazil, which it was for 214
years, until 1763. Its original name was São Salvador da
Bahia de Todos os Santos, after the bay it’s on, discovered 48
years earlier on All Saints Day, November 1. The heritage of
colonization is evident in Salvador’s architecture, culture
and mainly in the faces of its people.
Getting
to know Salvador requires a certain physical fitness, as the
city’s topografhy is often extremely uneven. With myriad
alleyways, squares, and steep streets. The central part is
divided into Cidade Alta and Cidade Baixa.
The Cidade Alta is where the Pelourinho is, and
the restored building complex, as well as some of the most
important churches in Brazil. In the Cidade Baixa, the Mercado
Modelo, Solar do Unhão, the road that leads to other
beaches of Todos os Santos bay, the Senhor do Bomfim church and
the Ribeira marina. Bahia’s women selling the spicy
Afro-Brazilian acarajé patty keep mainly to the bohemian
district of Rio Vermelho. And between Ondina and Pça.
Castro Alves is the famous carnival circuit along which 2
million revelers dance their way behind the trio-elétrico,
every year.
