Penedo
Penedo
has two main points of attractions: the architectural complex in
the historical center, and the natural beauties along the
majestic São Francisco River. All of the historical
center, mostly 17th century, has been turned into a
National Monument. The town lies quite high in relation to the
river, and its highest point is Pça. Barão
de Penedo with the Nossa Senhora do Rosário Cathedral,
the Oratório dos Condenados (Chapel of condemned), and
the Casa de Aposentadoria (house or retirement). Penedo is on the natural Southern border of Alagoas – the São
Francisco River. On the opposite side, lies Neópolis, in
Sergipe and a ferry carries passengers and vehicles across.
The
two towns are not far from the mouth of the river, and the
region is known as the lower São Francisco basin, which
is navigable.
