Caravelas
The small town of Caravelas, in the Southern tip of Bahia,
practically on the Espírito Santo State border, used to
be a trading port. Its importance grew enormously when a railway
was built in the second half of the 19th century
linking it to inland Minas Gerais State.
Its
historical site dates from those times, and, although neglected,
still displays some good examples of the neo-classical style of
its day, and façades decorated with tiles brought from the
Portuguese territory Macau, in China.
The railway was abandoned in the 1960’s because
of the bad state it was in, and the vast, national unification road
building project that was underway. In latter years, its proximity
to the Abrolhos Archipelago has turned it into a tourist center.
From Caravelas, boats also leave for some of the most popular snorkeling
places in Brazil.
